A Look At COVID-19 and Hunt County

A synopsis of COVID-19 and its impact on Hunt County.

The Background of Hunt County and COVID-19

According to the Herald-Banner, originally, Greenville Mayor David Dreiling was against an early COVID-19 declaration. He stated that there were no known cases in Hunt County. Mayor Dreiling also argued that the guidelines may be hard for a local law to properly enforce. Despite orders to stay inside, not all Hunt County citizens have been following the rules. Fox 4 reported July 6 that a Hunt County COVID 19 patient had not been following guidelines, repeatedly leaving their home despite being warned several times not to, resulting in them being sued. Fox 4 also reported that Hunt County funding for COVID 19 patients was raised.

The Numbers (Where We Are Today)

The Herald Banner reported that as of July 18, there have been 850 COVID- 19 cases. 444 of these cases are recoveries, with eight deaths and 10 hospitalizations. This is a significant jump from late March when there was only one known COVID 19 case in Hunt County. Though numbers remained low from March through May, there was a spike first appearing in June. According to the Herald-Banner as of July 17, there are three COVID 19 patients in Commerce, seven in Quinlan, and nine in Greenville, though this number has likely changed. There were 823 cases July 17, a jump by 27 patients by July 18.

Re-Opening

Texas A&M University-Commerce reported they are planning to re-open in the wake of students coming back to campus for the Fall 2020 semester, with precautions like limited capacity for on-campus events and dining facilities. Hunt County Judge Bobby Stovall stated that plans to reopen were set to begin May 1, with stores, movie theaters, restaurants, and malls limited to a 25% capacity. Hunt County Commissioners have renewed the existing COVID 19 resolution, extending it to July 28 rather than the original July 2 date.  To stay updated on the number of COVID 19 cases and recoveries, visit http://www.huntcounty.net/page/hunt.health_services.
