Welcome To The Hunt News Update!

Hello, my name is Sylvia, and welcome to the first blog post for The Hunt News Update! I bet the three or four people who are reading this are wondering: what exactly is this site about and why should I listen to you? Well, The Hunt News Update is a hyperlocal news blog (a site designed for niche local content) dedicated to weekly updates on politics in the Hunt County region. There is nothing wrong with the existing daily paper (The Herald Banner), but I feel this makes it clear that there is room for a paper with a heavy focus on one topic rather than touching on several at once (politics, local news, obituaries, weather, etc). In my opinion, politics are a major current social topic that has an impact on every community, no matter how big or small. For instance, political events that have touched the Hunt County community lately are protests over the death of George Floyd and police brutality, as well as the debate over COVID-19 (whether or not it’s necessary to close down or re-open businesses). There have been Black Lives Matter protests taking place throughout Hunt County (a student-led protest in Commerce, one held in Quinlan and one in Greenville). One of these protests, however, was only briefly covered by TheHerald-Banner (to the best of my knowledge). This indicates something: not every political protest is caught by the larger newspapers in Hunt County, some ultimately fall through the cracks altogether or just are not covered in depth. I believe a site covering the niche topic of local political events in Hunt County focused on a quick, digestible format (summarizing the main points of current Black Lives Matter Protests or COVID 19 in just a quick audio report or in a short article) can offer a way for people to fill themselves in on what’s happening with an audio clip or a quick article.

So, why should you come back to this site? What can this blog offer that makes it interesting outside of local political news? Well if you are like me, lengthy articles are interesting at first, but you eventually lose interest. There is the option of reading several short posts to catch up on an event, it can be equally awful. You are attempting to pull from several articles to get what you feel is crucial from each one. It can be an exhausting effort. My blog posts covering major topics are going to be structured to fill you in on what you likely do not know about the background of an event and the current situation. It does not take a lot of time to read or listen to, you do not have to sit and force yourself to focus. You can also interact with me and share what topic or event you want me to address (that you have seen in the news at least). I hope that this site can be informative and entertaining for everyone who reads it. Send me your topics @HuntPolitics
